The Inaugural Freight Academy will be hosted by, and based out of, the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. CAIT is a Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) U.S. Department of Transportation Tier I University Transportation Center Program. CAIT studies and tests solutions to central infrastructure challenges: public safety, national security, mobility, congestion, environmental impacts, economics, infrastructure health monitoring, and asset management. Among other ongoing programs, CAIT features the following: the Transportation Safety Research Center, the Laboratory for Port Security, The Environment and Energy Program, and the Maritime Infrastructure Engineering and Management Program. As host to the Freight Academy, CAIT is providing the classroom space, other meeting facilities, and logistical support. CAIT, through Rutgers University, will also be providing Freight Academy participants with Continuing Education Units. Additional information on CAIT can be found here: http://www.cait.rutgers.edu/.

The New York Shipping Association (NYSA) will be hosting the Freight Academy at their state-of-the-art training center for a full day of classroom sessions and field visits. NYSA is a premier professional organization in the maritime industry with a mission to “represent the interests of its members in maximizing the efficiency, cost competitiveness, safety and quality of marine cargo operations in the Port of New York and New Jersey.” Additional information about NYSA can be found here: http://www.nysanet.org/.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will host participants on Friday of the Freight Academy Immersion Week. EWR is the overnight small package center for the NY/NJ region and has 1.3 million square feet dedicated to cargo service. In 2006 EWR moved 979,271 tons of air cargo and 95,958 tons of air mail. The airport employs 24,000 people and contributes about $18.5 billion in economic activity to the NJ/NJ metropolitan region.¹ Additional information about EWR can be found here:
